Luxury Pool Finishes: Glass Tile, Polished Marble, Glass Bead, EcoFinish & Pebble

Which pool finishes are actually high-end—and which are simply expensive? Matt compares the luxury finish categories by appearance, feel, craftsmanship and relative cost.

Matt's short answer

If the question is purely “What can make a pool interior the most expensive?”, a full premium glass-tile interior is usually at the top because the material and installation are labor intensive. But Matt does not think “luxury” has one winner. A polished marble finish, glass-bead finish, premium pebble, custom Hydroglass-style blend or EcoFinish can all create a high-end pool for very different reasons.

*Relative-cost key: Matt's planning tiers only—not a quote. Full glass-tile interiors and custom mosaics can vary dramatically based on tile selection, pattern complexity, pool geometry and labor.

1. Full glass-tile interiors: the statement option

For homeowners who want the pool interior itself to become a design feature, full glass tile can sit at the top of the luxury spectrum. The cost is not only the tile. Layout, cuts, curves, steps, benches, grout work and installer skill create a labor-intensive project. The upside is a finish that can look more like custom architecture than conventional pool plaster.

Matt especially likes glass tile for spas, raised features and focal areas where the material can deliver a large visual payoff without covering the entire pool.

2. Polished marble and polished aggregate

Polished aggregate is one of Matt's favorite premium cementitious categories when a homeowner wants both a luxury look and a very smooth feel. CL Industries describes Hydrazzo as a polished marble-aggregate finish and markets its silky smooth texture as part of the luxury appeal. Matt's field ranking places polished aggregate just behind EcoFinish for long-term smoothness.

Another advantage: if the finish remains structurally sound, Matt says polished finishes can often be mechanically repolished later instead of automatically being torn out and replaced.

3. Glass bead: luxury through sparkle

Glass-bead finishes are about reflected light and visual depth. NPT describes JewelScapes as a glass-bead finish with a smooth feel and gem-like appearance. Other manufacturers sell comparable glass-bead systems. Matt's reminder is to compare the finish family and the actual installed look—not only the sample board.

4. Custom Hydroglass-style blends

Aqua Pool Finishes has completed custom polished blends combining glass and quartz in plaster, then polishing the surface. These can deliver a boutique result because the mix itself becomes part of the design. On the Tyler project shown above, Aqua Pool Finishes handled the interior finishing work on a new 235-foot-perimeter pool; the pool's overall design was later featured in a local magazine.

5. EcoFinish as a premium modern finish

EcoFinish is not always the most expensive option on the list, but Matt considers it premium because of the smooth feel, distinctive color palette and the way it avoids some of the tradeoffs he associates with cementitious finishes. It is also extremely installer-dependent, so Matt believes the applicator matters as much as the product.

Matt's field take

“With EcoFinish, the crew matters.” Matt wants experienced applicators who care about the final surface, are paid to do the job correctly and are expected to come back and fix mistakes if something goes wrong.

6. Premium pebble and glass-enhanced aggregate

Pebble remains a luxury choice when the homeowner wants a natural resort-style look. Smaller aggregate and specialty blends can soften the feel, while glass-enhanced versions can add sparkle. It is still an exposed-aggregate surface, so a homeowner who is extremely sensitive to texture may prefer polished aggregate, glass tile or EcoFinish.

What actually makes a finish look expensive?

Matt does not think luxury comes from price alone. The finish has to work with the pool's shape, tile, coping, decking, landscaping, architecture and light. A beautiful finish in the wrong color can fight the rest of the backyard; a less expensive finish chosen well can look more intentional.

If Matt were helping a luxury client choose

He would first ask whether the homeowner wants smooth and refined, sparkling and glamorous, natural and resort-like, or clean and modern. That answer narrows the finish family more effectively than starting with brand names.

Smooth + refined: polished marble/aggregate or EcoFinish.

Maximum statement: full glass tile or custom mosaics.

Sparkle: glass bead or a custom glass/quartz blend.

Natural resort look: premium pebble or glass-enhanced exposed aggregate.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most expensive type of pool finish?

A full interior of premium glass tile is typically at the very top of the finish-cost spectrum because both material and installation labor are intensive. Custom tile and mosaics can push the price even higher.

What pool finish feels the most luxurious?

That depends on what luxury means to the homeowner. Polished marble/aggregate offers a silky smooth stone-like feel; glass-bead finishes emphasize sparkle; full glass tile offers a jewel-box look; premium EcoFinish can create a very smooth modern surface.

Is pebble considered a luxury pool finish?

Premium pebble can absolutely be used on luxury pools, especially refined or glass-enhanced blends. It is usually chosen for a natural exposed-aggregate look rather than the ultra-smooth feel of polished marble or thermoplastic finishes.

Is the most expensive finish automatically the best?

No. Matt recommends choosing for the desired feel, appearance, maintenance and ownership plan rather than simply buying the highest-priced finish.
