Not every crack in a swimming pool is structural. Some are limited to plaster or another finish; some minor hairline cracks can exist in gunite without creating a major problem. A significant structural crack is different because the shell itself — and often the conditions around or beneath it — has to be evaluated.
“You always have to fix the cause of the problem.” If the shell cracked because of a void, erosion, drainage, ground movement or another underlying issue, patching the visible crack without correcting that cause is not a complete repair.
How do you know if a pool crack is structural?
With decades of field experience and pool construction work dating to 2001, Matt can often tell a lot from the pattern and behavior of the crack. Small plaster cracks tend to be finer and shorter. Structural cracks are more likely to run farther across the pool shell, cross fittings or other features, and may be associated with meaningful water loss.
Photos can provide clues, but Matt generally wants to inspect the pool in person. Underwater cracks are difficult to evaluate from a phone photo, and the visible surface does not show what is happening beneath the shell.
Does a dye test tell you if the crack is structural?
No. A dye test helps answer a different question: is water being pulled through this suspected leak point? Dye placed near a crack, fitting or hole may be drawn toward the opening when water is escaping. That can help locate a leak, but it does not determine whether the crack is structural.
What causes major structural cracks?
In Matt's field experience, common causes include ground movement, erosion and voids beneath the pool, hydraulic pressure/floating, drainage problems, and construction or reinforcement issues. The cause matters because the repair has to address more than the visible line in the surface.
In the pools Matt builds and repairs, he typically expects to see 3/8-inch reinforcing steel on roughly 8-inch centers, with tighter reinforcement in higher-stress areas when the design calls for it. He has also seen structural problems where, in his judgment, the reinforcement appeared inadequate for the area being stressed. These are Matt's field observations and construction practice — not a universal code statement. Actual reinforcement requirements depend on the pool design, engineering, soil conditions, loads and applicable local requirements.
How does Aqua Pool Finishes repair a structural crack?
The exact repair depends on the cause and severity. A major repair can involve opening/chipping out the damaged area, exposing the shell, filling voids beneath the pool when present, installing reinforcing steel or structural stitching/staples, epoxy work, rebuilding the opened area with high-strength non-shrink material, and then restoring the interior finish.
Matt does not view staples, epoxy or repair concrete as interchangeable one-step fixes. The reinforcement mechanically ties the damaged area together; epoxy helps bond/stabilize the crack area; and the high-strength non-shrink material rebuilds the section that had to be opened for access.
Repair or rebuild?
If there is one crack or a couple of cracks concentrated in one area, the pool can often be repaired after the root cause is corrected. Widespread movement is different. Matt has seen a pool float badly enough that there were too many structural issues to justify localized repairs; it had to be demolished and rebuilt with new steel, plumbing and gunite.
One of Matt's most severe crack repairs
One of the worst failures Matt has repaired involved a pool shell that had floated out of the ground and developed a massive crack. The repair required removing gunite, filling voids beneath the shell, adding reinforcement/staples, epoxy work, non-shrink repair material and then replastering. Matt recalls similar repairs in Houston and Tyler, including jobs in 2017 and 2021. He remembers them performing well after repair, but has not inspected those pools recently enough to make a current-condition claim.
Why you should not ignore an active leak
A temporary putty repair can sometimes slow or stop water loss, but it does not restore the structural strength of the pool. More importantly, leaking water is going somewhere. In Matt's experience, ongoing water loss can contribute to erosion beneath the shell or along a side wall and can make the eventual repair more expensive.
What happens to the pool finish after the structural repair?
If the pool has EcoFinish®, a localized repaired area can often be recoated and blended into the surrounding coating. With plaster, quartz, pebble and other cementitious finishes, a small patch is possible but usually remains visible. For appearance, Matt often recommends refinishing the entire pool or carrying the new finish to a natural stopping point such as a wall.
How long does structural crack repair take?
Matt's typical field estimate is about 5–10 days from draining through structural repair and refilling, depending on severity and how much refinishing is needed. That is a planning range, not a guaranteed schedule.
What does structural crack repair cost?
Matt's rough field estimate is often $200–$300 or more per linear foot for the structural repair itself, before restoring the interior finish. A 20-foot structural crack can therefore become a substantial project.
If the finish is already dated, the repair can become a logical time to address resurfacing, waterline tile and coping at the same time. At that point the job may function more like a full pool renovation than a standalone crack repair.
Do you warranty structural crack repairs?
Aqua Pool Finishes provides a 3-year warranty on the specific structural crack repair we perform, subject to the written project agreement. That warranty applies to the repaired crack; it does not guarantee that a new crack cannot develop elsewhere later from new ground movement, erosion, drainage or another unrelated structural issue.
What should happen first?
Diagnose the cause → correct the cause → repair the structure → restore the finish.
If there is an unresolved drainage problem, active erosion, a void or another condition still stressing the shell, Matt wants that issue corrected before the structural repair is considered complete.
What is the biggest homeowner mistake?
Ignoring a significant crack and waiting too long. In Matt's experience, the longer an active structural problem is left unaddressed, the more damage it can cause and the more expensive the eventual repair may become.
