Saltwater pools come up often when homeowners are choosing a finish. The first thing I explain is that a “saltwater pool” is still a chlorinated pool—the salt chlorine generator uses dissolved salt to produce chlorine.
Yes. ecoFINISH aquaBRIGHT is compatible with saltwater pool systems. ecoFINISH publishes guidance specifically for saltwater environments, and its startup and maintenance instructions state that saltwater chlorinators may be used after the water is balanced. That does not mean saltwater is harmless to every material or component around a pool.
ecoFINISH describes aquaBRIGHT as a nonporous, chemical-resistant thermoplastic coating and publishes saltwater-specific material describing the coating as a protective barrier for pool surfaces. Its maintenance guide also specifically addresses salt pools and allows saltwater chlorinators once the water has been balanced.
What has Matt seen with saltwater pools?
I am not personally a big fan of salt systems because I have seen salt-related deterioration involving stone, cement-based materials and metal components. But I have not personally seen salt deteriorate an ecoFINISH surface. That distinction matters: my concern about a salt pool is not the same as saying salt damages every material in the pool.
Does ecoFINISH make the rest of a saltwater pool corrosion-proof?
No. The interior finish is only one part of the pool. Ladders, rails, fasteners, equipment, heaters, stone, coping and other materials can have different exposure and corrosion concerns. Choosing a salt-resistant interior finish does not change the material properties of everything else around it.
Do saltwater pools still need chemistry maintenance?
Absolutely. Saltwater is not maintenance-free water. Chlorine, pH, alkalinity and the other chemistry parameters still need to be monitored and maintained.
ecoFINISH’s startup and maintenance guidance requires ongoing water testing and chemical adjustment throughout the life of the pool. The manufacturer also gives specific chemical-use cautions and states that saltwater chlorinators may be added or used once the water is balanced.
Why might ecoFINISH appeal to a saltwater-pool owner?
For the interior surface, the manufacturer’s case is based on nonporosity and resistance to chemicals and salt exposure. In my own work, the practical appeal is that the coating gives the homeowner a smooth surface while separating the pool water from a traditional exposed cementitious finish.
I would still make the decision based on the whole project: existing substrate, budget, desired feel, appearance, how long you plan to own the home, and the condition of the rest of the pool.
Does saltwater mean you should automatically choose ecoFINISH?
No. I install multiple finish types, and I do not think every customer needs the same finish. A homeowner may choose quartz, pebble, polished aggregate, glass or another finish for perfectly valid reasons. Saltwater compatibility is one factor, not the entire decision.
I really don’t have a problem with any of these finishes. They all have pros and cons. I just think ecoFINISH has fewer cons. If another finish fits the customer’s budget, look and ownership plans better, I will tell them that.
ecoFINISH is a legitimate option for a saltwater pool, and the manufacturer supports its use with saltwater chlorination. Just do not confuse “compatible with saltwater” with “the entire pool is protected from corrosion” or “water chemistry no longer matters.”
