Why do fiberglass pools need resurfacing?
Fiberglass shells can remain structurally useful while the visible surface becomes worn, faded, chalky, stained, rough, blistered or previously patched. Some pools have already been re-gelcoated or painted and are now showing another round of surface problems. Before refinishing, Matt wants to know whether the issue is only the finish or whether the fiberglass shell itself also needs repair.
The original surface can lose its clean, uniform appearance after years of UV exposure, chemistry and use.
Localized defects need to be opened, repaired and stabilized appropriately before a new finish is expected to perform.
Previously coated surfaces may require additional removal and preparation. A new finish is only as reliable as the surface beneath it.
polyFIBRO vs. traditional gelcoat
Gelcoat and polyFIBRO are different systems. Gelcoat is widely used to manufacture fiberglass pools and can also be used in refinishing. ecoFINISH developed polyFIBRO specifically as a thermoplastic alternative for fiberglass aquatic surfaces, including pools that are already installed in the ground.

Matt has seen fiberglass pools develop gelcoat-related surface problems much earlier than homeowners expected—sometimes around the five-year mark. That is his field observation, not a universal lifespan for every gelcoat pool. Climate, chemistry, installation, product quality and shell condition all matter.
Why Aqua Pool Finishes likes polyFIBRO for fiberglass renovation
The appeal is not simply that it is “another coating.” It gives Matt a dedicated fiberglass system from the same manufacturer behind the EcoFinish products he already applies on concrete pools. ecoFINISH describes polyFIBRO as resistant to chemicals, UV exposure, chalking and spalling, and designed to move with a fiberglass shell more effectively than a brittle surface would.

Preparation matters more than the sales pitch
A fiberglass pool has to be evaluated before anyone promises that resurfacing will solve the problem. Old paint may need removal. Blisters, cracks, damaged laminate or failed repairs need to be addressed. The surface then has to be cleaned and prepared using the system appropriate for fiberglass.
“With EcoFinish, the crew matters.” Matt believes the best results come from experienced applicators who care about the finished product, are paid to do the work correctly, and are accountable for fixing mistakes. A good product cannot compensate for careless preparation or application.
Is polyFIBRO automatically better than gelcoat for every pool?
No. Aqua Pool Finishes prefers polyFIBRO as a resurfacing option for many aging in-ground fiberglass pools, but “better” depends on the pool, the shell condition, the previous coatings, the desired appearance and the quality of the installer. A new factory-built fiberglass shell and an older pool being restored in the backyard are also very different situations.
What we are evaluating
We look at the existing surface, evidence of blistering or delamination, cracks and repairs, prior paint or coatings, waterline condition, steps and benches, and whether the shell is sound enough for refinishing.
Colors and appearance
polyFIBRO can use ecoFINISH colors on suitable fiberglass surfaces. That opens the door to light blues, deeper blues, gray tones, sand tones and darker dramatic finishes. Remember that a dry sample does not perfectly predict the appearance of a filled pool. Depth, sunlight, shade, landscaping and surrounding materials all affect the water color.

Can you coat over damaged gelcoat?
Sometimes the existing finish can remain in part, but damaged or poorly bonded material cannot simply be ignored. The preparation plan depends on what Matt finds during evaluation.
Can polyFIBRO fix a leaking or structurally cracked fiberglass shell?
No finish should be treated as the structural repair itself. The underlying fiberglass damage and source of water loss have to be repaired first.
Can you change the color of a fiberglass pool?
Yes, subject to the colors appropriate for the selected ecoFINISH system and project. See our color guide for examples.
