I have worked in pool construction since 2001 and have been personally involved with well over 500 pools. Rough plaster is something I see regularly when I look at older pools, especially when a homeowner is trying to decide whether the surface can be cleaned or repaired or whether it is time to resurface.
Pool plaster can feel rough because minerals have deposited on top of the finish, because the cementitious surface itself has etched or deteriorated, or because both processes have occurred over time. Water chemistry, finish age, installation, startup and maintenance can all affect what happens to the surface. A rough pool should be diagnosed before anyone assumes the answer is an acid wash or a complete resurfacing.
Rough plaster does not always mean calcium scale
When a homeowner tells me the bottom of the pool feels like sandpaper, one of the first things I want to know is whether we are feeling something that has accumulated on the plaster or whether the plaster itself has changed.
The National Plasterers Council defines pool scale as minerals or metals that come out of solution and adhere to surfaces, which can create roughness. NPC also explains the opposite chemistry problem: water that is too aggressive can dissolve components of a cementitious finish and cause etching and deterioration.
Those are very different mechanisms. One adds material to the surface. The other removes or deteriorates part of the cementitious surface.
1. Mineral scale can build up on the surface
Calcium hardness is only one part of the chemistry picture. High calcium hardness combined with conditions such as elevated pH or alkalinity can favor scale formation. The result can be a rough, whitish or dull deposit on the pool surface.
North Texas Municipal Water District describes its treated water as moderately hard and says naturally occurring minerals including calcium and magnesium are present in regional water sources. NTMWD also notes that hard-water minerals can leave lime-scale deposits.
That does not mean every North Texas pool will scale. Once water is in a swimming pool, the pool's own chemistry and maintenance determine whether the water remains balanced or moves toward scale-forming or aggressive conditions.
2. Aggressive water can etch the plaster itself
A rough finish can also come from the opposite direction. Cementitious finishes contain cement and aggregate. When water remains chemically aggressive, it can react with and dissolve susceptible components of that cementitious matrix.
NPC identifies low pH, low carbonate alkalinity and low calcium hardness as conditions that can contribute to aggressive water and etching. Continued leaching can deteriorate the cement paste around aggregate particles and change the texture of the finish.
That is why I do not like the blanket explanation that rough plaster simply means a pool has “too much calcium.” Both scale-forming water and aggressive water can create surface problems, but in different ways.
3. Age, installation and years of maintenance matter too
In North Texas, I have seen some plaster pools become noticeably rough around four or five years old, and I have seen surfaces around ten years old that were extremely rough and deteriorated. I do not consider those ages a universal lifespan for plaster. I have also seen finishes perform differently depending on installation, startup, chemistry and maintenance.

A calendar cannot tell me by itself whether your pool needs resurfacing. I want to see what the surface is actually doing.
Can quartz and pebble finishes get rough too?
Yes. Quartz and pebble finishes are also cementitious systems, although their aggregate and intended texture differ from traditional white plaster. Water chemistry still matters to the cementitious matrix.
Pebble is intentionally more textured than smooth plaster, and many customers like that look. I have also seen older pebble surfaces become rougher as the cement matrix changes and more aggregate is exposed. That does not make pebble a bad finish—it is one of the tradeoffs a homeowner should understand when choosing a surface.
Does rough plaster mean I need to resurface?
Not automatically. If the roughness is primarily a removable deposit and the underlying finish is still sound, treatment may be possible without replacing the entire finish. If the plaster itself is badly etched, pitted, deteriorated or delaminating, cleaning cannot put missing cementitious material back.
That is why diagnosis comes first. The goal is to determine whether you have a deposit problem, a deteriorated-surface problem, or both.
Will an acid wash fix rough plaster?
An acid wash is not a universal cure for roughness. Acid works by reacting with cementitious material. Depending on the condition and cause of the problem, it may help address certain deposits or stains, but it can also further expose or etch an already worn cementitious surface.
I am especially cautious about recommending an acid wash on older plaster that is already deteriorated. I have seen acid washing improve the appearance of some younger surfaces with appropriate staining or buildup, but I would not choose it from the age of the pool alone. I want to inspect the finish first.
There is no authoritative fixed age at which an acid wash becomes automatically safe or unsafe. The condition of the surface and the problem being treated matter more than a simple year cutoff.
What about ecoFINISH?
ecoFINISH is a thermoplastic polymer coating rather than a cementitious plaster finish, so it does not have the same cement matrix for aggressive water to etch.
I have personally never encountered calcium-scale buildup on an ecoFINISH surface in the pools I have worked with. That is my field experience—not a claim that improperly balanced pool water can never precipitate minerals. Every pool still needs proper water chemistry.
One of the reasons I personally prefer ecoFINISH for a homeowner who prioritizes a smooth surface is that the coating is nonporous and stays different underfoot from an exposed cementitious aggregate finish. But I still recommend the finish that fits the customer's budget, appearance preferences and ownership plans.
If your pool has become rough, find out whether something has built up on the surface or whether the surface itself has deteriorated before choosing the remedy. In North Texas, mineral-rich fill water is relevant, but “hard water” is not a complete diagnosis. Balanced pool chemistry matters in both directions.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my pool feel like sandpaper?
Possible causes include mineral scale deposited on the surface, etching or deterioration of a cementitious finish, intentionally exposed aggregate, or a combination of conditions. An inspection and water testing can help distinguish them.
Can high calcium make pool plaster rough?
High calcium hardness can contribute to scale when other water conditions favor precipitation, especially pH and alkalinity. Calcium hardness by itself does not explain every rough surface.
Can low calcium damage plaster?
Yes. NPC identifies low calcium hardness, low pH and low alkalinity as conditions that can create aggressive water and contribute to etching or deterioration of cementitious finishes.
Can rough pool plaster be made smooth again?
Sometimes, depending on the cause and how much sound finish remains. A removable deposit is different from plaster that has physically deteriorated. Severely etched, pitted or failing material may make resurfacing the more sensible solution.
Is rough plaster dangerous?
A rough surface can be uncomfortable and can scrape feet or skin. It can also be a clue that the finish or water chemistry deserves evaluation. The texture alone does not identify the underlying cause.
